I finally heard from my sister, Mary...since they moved Kimmie to Kansas. Kimberly is doing well, but she still hasn't woken up.
She is opening her eyes on occasion, but doesn't focus and Mary says her
eyes are "blank". I guess that's to be expected. Mary is quite upset over
it, for good reason...she's scared that Kim will wake up but not be "Kim"...just
exist in a persistent vegetative state.
Kimmie's fiance, Joel, was on the flight with her to Kansas and said that as they passed through turbulence on the flight that she opened her eyes and looked around a few times. The trip didn't seem to affect her adversely. My sister said it took Kimmie about a day to get back to being responsive again after their arrival (opening her eyes, moving her limbs, etc.).
She surprised her nurses yesterday! They were there when her Joel's parents brought in his 2 nephews. Mary asked her to say hi to them and she threw her hand up and waved at them! :):):):) Also, as Mary and Jerry (Joel's father) were at her bedside yesterday morning, they were joking around about how my sister, Mary, is so unorganized...and Kimmie smiled ...when Mary teased about her purse and the mess it's always in, Kimmie grinned real big! :):):):)
They are having a consultation this afternoon, deciding her course of treatment and rehab. They say it will be a long ordeal, but we are still trying to be positive about the outcome. I just hope they give her a good chance to "prove herself" without giving up on her. Mary said the Drs. there are the same as they were here...they don't like giving the patients the benefit of the doubt...and tend to think the worst. Kimmie won't "show off" for them there yet, so they still are going on the assumption that she will only respond to stimuli and not do anything on her own...which I don't understand since the darn nurses saw her wave and all...I don't understand those people at all.
To all of you who are praying for Kimmie's recovery, thank you!
We'll get there! I keep having to remind myself that in the whole scheme
of things (with coma patients), she's come a long way in a short time and
we have to be patient! It's hard sometimes to remember that.
