Kimmie woke up this afternoon and stayed awake and fully aware for 5 or more
minutes!!!
My sister, Mary, had been with her all night and all day today...and was upset because Kimberly had been almost totally unresponsive during that time. (Mind you, when I say "responsive", I'm just meaning that Kimmie is wiggling toes, flicking eyes open, responding to basic requests like that from Mary and Joel...) This afternoon, Kim's future sister-in-law brought her 2 children in again to see her (they are the same ones she waved at the other day without opening her eyes)...when they got there, my sister told Kimmie the kids were there again to see her...to which Kimmie opened her eyes, focused on the 3 year old and smiled, reaching her hand out to him!!! I asked my sister if that scared him at all and she said, "Nope..he smiled at her and started saying ...'We love you, Kimmie!' ". Kim was fully aware of who she was and who everyone else in the room was. They ran and got her a "YES / NO board" and she responded to quite a few questions by pointing with her good hand! They sat her up and she liked it, although she couldn't hold herself up on her own. They asked if she was tired and she repeatedly pointed to "YES". Mary said that even after she apparently went back to "sleep" that when she physically held Kimmie's eyes open, she would focus on her and move her eyes left and right to answer questions!! This is GREAT GREAT NEWS!!!! Before now, she simply opened her eyes in a blank stare and did not focus on anything or any movement. Although she will slip back in and out...as expected...at last we KNOW beyond a doubt that she knows what's going on and remembers us and even more important, she is actually capable of rising out of the coma state! That gives every hope in the world that she will be able to, with intensive/aggressive therapy, wake up for longer and longer periods until she recovers enough for actual physical rehab. Her right side is going to be extremely weakened...but as with stroke survivors, that can be helped quite a bit through therapy...so no big deal! The Drs say she has no "drop foot" and not one bedsore so far..which is a small miracle in itself!
Mary said it was Kimberly's "second birthday" today...and the third happiest day in her life (besides the actual births of her 2 kids). She is in a MUCH better frame of mind now and was so excited on the phone that she could barely speak straight! :):):):) No matter what happens now, we know she is there and is capable of waking up...with that, we can have all the patience in the world :):):)
Please continue praying for Kimmie's complete recovery...the Drs
said it would take a miracle...our miracle is happening!!
