June 26th, 2001 - Day 21

Kimmie woke up this morning and stayed awake for .......2-1/2 hours!!!

I wanted to get this News Flash out quick since my parents (Kimmie's grandparents) are currently traveling in Europe and aren't able to be in contact all the time...I know that they are sharing this website with their host families as they move around, so this is news to them as well as the rest of you! :)

This morning (June 26th), Kimmie woke up and stayed awake for over 2 hours!!! She was fully aware and even went so far as to hold up fingers in response to simple math questions! I just talked to my sister a few minutes ago on the phone and got all of the details. She had a heart-to-heart "talk" with Kimberly this morning...letting her know that she needed to show the Drs. what she'd shown the family...or else they wouldn't get her going on rehab. Mary said that as soon as the Drs. came in to do their assessment, Kimberly followed every single command they gave her...without hesitation! Needless to say, he was rather amazed since until this morning, she was considered "unresponsive"! *chuckles*  The Dr. who had, just days ago, given Mary such a dire prognosis on Kimmie officially stepped down as her physician this morning, saying he was no longer needed! When her nurse came in after that happened, Mary had her working with the "yes/no answer board" again and was also amazed by her progress. It was the first thing he'd seen her do since her arrival in Wichita. He stepped closer and asked her to show him 2 fingers, then 1, then asked her what 1+1 and 2+2 was...to which she replied correctly every time without hesitation! He also held up 3 fingers and asked her to do the same without mentioning how many he was holding up and she was able to do that...so her vision and higher brain functions are definitely working :):):):)  They had her sitting in a chair for about a half hour today, too. She still has a touch of the pneumonia and what the Drs. call a "friendly staph infection" in her lungs. She coughs deep and is able to bring up a lot from her lungs...which is good. Mary said she coughed so hard last night that she actually coughed her trach tube completely out of her throat!! Mary said that she still slips back into a "light coma" in between these awake times...but that's expected at first and OK. People don't simply wake up, with full comprehension, like they show on TV and movies! It just doesn't work that way, sadly enough. She wants to wake up now and will point to her eyes if she wants them open and can't get them open on her own. It's her signal for Mary to physically hold them open for her! I spoke to her over the phone tonight...Mary held it to her ear for her while I talked...I made an inside joke with her...to which Mary said she broke into a lop-sided grin and rolled her eyes around! :):)  Another good bit of news is that she moved her right arm today...from her side to up on her hip. It's the first time she's been able to move it since the accident. All she had done until now was twitch a few fingers on that hand.

Please re-visit this page often...I have a feeling we are going to be updating often now! :)

Happy Birthday...a few days early...to my Mom (who's in Germany at the moment) Could you have asked for a better present!?!?!?!?!?

Thank you to all who have sent e-mails and prayers for Kimberly!! It really does help and each one is appreciated!
Please continue praying for Kimmie's complete recovery...the Drs said it would take a miracle...our miracle is happening!!
